Key communication challenges in open-pit mining operations

Open-pit mining presents significant communication complications due to the vast size of the mining area and the numerous contractors involved in operations. Hauling truck pilots often struggle with manual processes of switching talk groups to communicate with the correct excavators. This can lead to:

  • Limited visibility: Hauling trucks need to manually change their communication groups to correspond with the correct excavation team.
  • Miscommunication: Pilots often fail to remain in the correct group, resulting in operational inefficiencies and potentially dangerous situations.
  • Reduced productivity: The lack of coordinated communication creates delays, lowering overall mining productivity.
  • Traffic congestion: Miscommunications frequently occur between hauling trucks, leading to communication breakdown in the mining area.

To address these challenges, Sepura deployed the SC20 and SCG22 radios, coupled with the innovative AutoMate application. AutoMate enhances operational productivity and ensures staff safety. The key features of this application include:

  • Automatic talk group switching: Sepura’s radios, integrated with AutoMate, enable instant switching of talk groups without the need to go through the network. This ensures that each hauling truck automatically joins the relevant excavation team group as it enters different sections of the mining area.
  • Dynamic map adjustments: The AutoMate application adapts dynamically to shifting mine operations, automatically adjusting the map to suit changes in the terrain and operational setup, allowing for flexible communication groupings.
  • Extended coverage: The system ensures uninterrupted communication, even in areas where trunk mode coverage is unavailable, by providing Direct Mode Talk Groups for communication outside of mining zones.
  • Optimised coordination: With AutoMate, hauling trucks and excavators are assured of always being on the correct talk group, eliminating the risk of communication breakdowns.
