Norwegian National Museum

The Norwegian National Museum, is a leading cultural institution in Norway. In 2022, it relocated to a modern, state-of-the-art facility on Oslo’s waterfront, becoming one of the largest museums in the Nordic region.

As the museum transitioned to its state-of-the-art facility, it sought a solution to improve situational awareness, optimise operations, and enhance the safety of both visitors and staff. The museum implemented Sepura’s SmartView Application on their SC21 TETRA handheld radios. This advanced indoor location solution has proven vital in boosting operational efficiency, ensuring safety, and providing real-time situational awareness across the museum’s expansive and complex site.

Relocating to a new building, the museum faced unique operational challenges due to its size and layout. GPS technology was insufficient as it could not differentiate between floors within the museum, nor provide accurate real-time indoor location data. With a national collection of over 400,000 pieces and an annual visitor count exceeding 600,000, precise team coordination was critical for handling security, maintenance, and emergency responses.

Sepura’s Indoor Location SmartView Application offered an innovative solution, using a network of Bluetooth beacons positioned throughout the building. Integrated with the SC21 radios already in use by museum staff, the system provided:

• Real-time location tracking: Automatically updated staff locations within the building, including floor-level differentiation.

• Cost-effective integration: No additional hardware was required, as the SC21 radios supported the upgrade through Sepura’s AppSPACE environment.
