The courtyard outside Sepura’s hub canteen has long been an underutilised space. Recognising the potential to improve both the physical space and the wellbeing of staff, the social committee, led by Events Executive Alice Gibeau, proposed the idea of a gardening club to develop a community garden. The project aims to introduce natural elements such as flowers and vegetables, while creating a more welcoming atmosphere for employees and visitors.
As plans for the garden took shape, Sepura made a conscious decision to partner with a local organisation that could contribute to the project in a meaningful and sustainable way. The team was particularly interested in finding a partner whose values aligned with Sepura’s ESG goals.
Building skills and sustainability with The Phoenix Trust
A recommendation led to The Phoenix Trust, a charity based near Sepura’s headquarters. The organisation helps adults with learning disabilities develop practical skills in joinery, landscaping, and manufacturing while contributing to real-world projects that support both their personal and professional development.
A core aspect of the charity’s work involves producing garden furniture and planters from reclaimed materials, including wooden pallets.
The Phoenix Trust agreed to build a series of bespoke wooden planters for Sepura’s courtyard, crafted by co-workers using recycled wood.
This project has provided our co-workers with an excellent opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting. It’s rewarding to see local companies investing in social value. The collaboration with Sepura has been incredibly encouraging for everyone involved.
A spokesperson from The Phoenix Trust
As part of the ongoing partnership, Sepura has committed to donating broken or surplus pallets, which would otherwise have been disposed of, to support the charity’s use of recycled materials.
The launch of the courtyard garden also coincided with World Earth Day, offering a timely opportunity to reflect on the role businesses play in protecting the planet.
This collaboration shows how practical needs can be met in a way that reflects long-term ESG goals. Sepura will continue to seek out partnerships that generate both operational and social value.
