What is ESG and why does it matter to Sepura?

  • Environmental (E): Managing impacts on the environment, such as emissions and resource use.
  • Social (S): Building inclusivity, diversity, employee well-being and social value.
  • Governance (G): Ensuring compliance, transparency, and accountability across business operations.

ESG is not a new priority for Sepura but a continuation of the company’s long-standing commitment to integrity and sustainability. It reflects a comprehensive approach to managing risks and delivering value for stakeholders. This focus has been deeply embedded in its operations and has now evolved into a structured framework.

Operating in the critical communications sector, the customers Sepura serves include police, fire, and ambulance services, where integrity and responsibility are paramount. Reflecting these values is an essential part of how Sepura delivers its services and products. Increasing demands from governments and the expectations of corporate responsibility necessitate detailed reporting and sustainable practices. Through its ESG framework, Sepura delivers exceptional products and upholds the highest ethical and sustainable business standards to meet these needs.

Driving impact with the ESG strategy at Sepura

Sepura’s ESG strategy is built on four foundational pillars: product, people, planet and principles.

  • Product: Developing high-quality products that adhere to the highest standards while minimising environmental impact.
  • People: Cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and supportive culture for employees, customers, and end-users.
  • Planet: Reducing environmental impacts through targeted emission reductions and resource efficiency.
  • Principles: Upholding ethical governance, transparency, and accountability across all business operations.

These pillars align seamlessly with the company’s core values of customer focus, innovation, teamwork, quality and integrity. They also serve as a framework for impactful initiatives.

Sepura’s has also defined ESG objectives to reinforce its dedication to sustainability, transparency, and innovation.

  • Aspiration for net zero: Sepura is committed to achieving net-zero emissions, beginning with comprehensive data collection on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. This data covers direct emissions, those from purchased energy, and indirect emissions from the wider value chain. This ensures a comprehensive approach to reducing Sepura’s carbon footprint.
  • Transparent communication: The company prioritises open, honest reporting to stakeholders, both internal and external, ensuring credibility and accountability.
  • Exceeding expectations: Sepura strives not only to meet but to exceed regulatory requirements, adopting industry best practices to set new standards of excellence.

These goals focus on reducing environmental impact, building trust through open communication, and exceeding industry standards for responsible business practices.

ESG in action

Sepura’s ESG initiatives are designed to deliver meaningful benefits to all stakeholders and reflect its commitment to lead by example with responsible business practices.

Encouraging colleagues to connect with the company’s broader purpose helps create a sense of shared responsibility among employees, who take pride in knowing their work contributes to positive change. Internal company projects demonstrate small yet impactful steps to improve workplace sustainability and encourage active participation:

  • Zero-waste days: The catering team has repurposed unused ingredients into new dishes, significantly reducing food waste.
  • Reducing food packaging: By replacing pre-packaged sandwiches with freshly prepared options, Sepura has reduced both food and packaging waste.
  • Coffee grounds reuse: Employees are encouraged to take used coffee grounds along with recipe cards, promoting sustainability and inspiring practical reuse at home, whether in the garden or kitchen.
  • Food waste bins: Dedicated food waste bins have been introduced to minimise waste, comply with upcoming food waste legislation, and enhance cleanliness and efficiency in shared spaces.
  • Reusing packaging. Where possible Sepura reuses packaging materials from its manufacturing partners.

Sepura measures the success of its ESG initiatives through both qualitative and quantitative indicators, ensuring a comprehensive view of progress. Employee engagement and stakeholder feedback highlight the effectiveness of internal communications and participation in sustainability efforts. Positive responses to initiatives such as zero-waste days and replacing pre-packaged sandwiches, demonstrate alignment with the company’s ESG goals.

Externally, accreditation schemes like ISO 14001 show Sepura’s commitment to maintaining high environmental standards. These certifications validate Sepura’s efforts and provide a framework for accountability and continuous improvement. Managing Scope 1 and 2 emissions helps Sepura’s customers with their Scope 3 emissions, contributing to their sustainability goals.

People want to work for a company that stands for something positive. At Sepura, we’re proud to create products that make a real difference. As a socially conscious organisation, we are committed to driving positive change.
